Medical, psychological and socio-educational care for street children in Bamako

2010 till 2010
Bamako, Mali

In most communities in Mali, orphaned children are cared for by members of their extended family. However, traditional social systems tend to break down, especially in big cities. As a result, many orphans (street children and “talibés” (children from Koranic schools)) are left to fend for themselves, with no family care or support. These children have no access to education or health care and are therefore in a very vulnerable situation.

Street children in Bamako, girls and boys, aged between 5 and 18, that are particulary vulnerable and in a situation of survival

To improve the health and well-being of vulnerable children in Bamako by providing them with medical, psychological and socio-educational care.

• Capacity building of local organizations regarding the psychology and social care of vulnerable children;
• Awareness-raising activities for children and their families in terms of health;
• Support for schooling and vocational training;
• Donation of material, equipment and medical goods for the Caritas infirmary. In 2010, prenatal consultations exceeded 80%; the same applies to vaccination rates of children over 5 years old.
