SRA Sisters

A multi-faceted partnership to support the education and development of "out-of-caste" youth

2007 till 2021
Etat du Karnataka, U.S. Virgin Islands

With regards to education, Indian youth in the state of Karnataka face numerous issues that can be summarised in four areas: low awareness of the importance of education, difficulty in accessing education for girls, lack of a quality education, difficulty in finding employment due to a lack of quality and relevant training.

For this reason, since 2007, FJFP has supported 4 projects to support education in different places in the Karnataka region, in connection with the religious communities of the SRA Congregation.

Vulnerable children and young adults, mostly “out of caste”, orphans and physically disabled in the state of Karnataka.

FJFP supported 4 SRA projects:
1. Support to kindergarten children in 5 villages in Khanapur and socio-vocational training for 870 vulnerable and out-of-caste girls, including 70 physically disabled girls who benefited from training and empowerment programmes.
2. Socio-professional training (tailoring, computers and secretarial skills) in Soraba for 45 young girls (18-25 years) who had been forced to drop out of school and were destined for domestic work. 45% became self-employed and 40% found a job with a private worker.
3. Construction of the Paediatric Unit of the St Ignatius Rural Hospital in Honavar. The support also allowed the development of a geriatric unit through the training of young girls who had dropped out of school for geriatric and palliative care
4. Construction of an English Medium School in Santhpur, for the benefit of underprivileged children in the region.

K. P. _ Grade 3 student of Deepalaya Primary School

Deepalaya School has changed me in many ways. I can read and write better. I sing, I play sports. I tidy my things. I keep myself clean. My teachers are very nice and I like them very much. I used to be shy and did not participate in school activities. Now I participate in everything. I have improved in English. My teachers have helped me a lot. This kind of opportunity is very rare in a village school. So we are very lucky. I like my school and I promise to study a lot to make my parents and teachers happy.
